St. Philip's Volunteers Help Those in Need

Each week a small group of parishioners of St Philips Episcopal Church on Bestgate Rd, in Annapolis, gather together at the church to prepare lunches for the Light House.

Led by Linda Boyd, the group meets each Wednesday night to fill over 100 bag lunches that are distributed by the shelter to those in the Annapolis community in need. Complete with a sandwich, drinks, fruit and snacks, the paper bags are filled and then delivered the next day to the shelter for distribution.

Lorraine Thomas and her husband, Arand have been making sandwiches for over 5 years, "it's a way for us to give back. There are those in the community that are in need and we enjoy being able to help."

"Tonight is a little special", explained Ms. Boyd, "Rev. John Naegele asked the parishioners to donate loaves of bread. We had an overwhelming response, collecting over 30 loaves and Rev. John blessed the bread. He actually took the loaves to the Giant who graciously sliced it for him."

Indian Creek Middle School Volunteers Once a Week

Beginning this year, the Indian Middle School started supporting the shelter in three major areas: through the holiday sharing program, through participation in the bagged lunch program, and by taking small groups of students to the shelter to volunteer. During this year's Holiday Sharing, each Middle School advisory group collectively donated specific items that would help support residents at the shelter. They provided hats, scarves, gloves, sweaters & sweat shirts clothing, toiletries, bus tokens, gift cards, phone cards, etc. It was a very successful holiday sharing for everyone.

Twice a month Indian Creek students have committed to provide the shelter with lunches for their bagged lunch program. They have alternated between having two advisory groups work together to pack lunches with supplies provided by Indian Creek families.

"Our students have loved the experience, and all who have volunteered are waiting the chance to go again. My plan is to start an afterschool or weekend extension of the program, perhaps even keep it going through the summer." ~ Nicole Easton, Educational Services Coordinator
